The Health Power of Water

Have you discovered the power in water--not the kind that makes the energy for your lights and appliances, but the cool, refreshing liquid your body needs and craves?  Of course, we know the body must have hydration in order to survive, but in addition to the necessity of water, there are many health benefits from getting eight glasses of eight ounces per day:  weight loss, optimal body function, healthy skin, removal of toxins, and protection for joints and muscles.

Weight Loss
Studies have shown that water is a natural appetite suppressant, and even mild hydration can slow the body's metabolism by 3%. Water also aids in weight loss by keeping the digestive and absorption systems working properly.  It helps by increasing the sense of fullness and satisfaction which helps curb overeating.  Foods that contain higher water content last longer in the stomach, so in addition to drinking water, eating foods with high water content is very beneficial in helping lose weight. Water also gives the body energy necessary for exercise.

Optimal Body Function
Water is involved in every aspect of the body's function.  It helps the body absorb essential nutrients, maintain a normal body temperature, and carries waste materials out of the body.  If we don't get enough water, our bodies just won't function at an optimal level. The secret is to drink throughout the day so the body is fully hydrated.

Healthy Skin
Water nourishes our skin.  This helps the skin have a healthy glow and even gives it a more youthful appearance.  Drinking water gives the skin moisture it needs to maintain elasticity and suppleness. 

Removal of Toxins
The liver and the kidneys need water to flush out toxins. This may even help prevent kidney stones and urinary tract infections.  The body's waste management system is aided as well because water prevents chronic constipation.

Joints and Muscles
Water lubricates and cushions joints and muscles, protecting them from damage.  This helps the joints and muscles at all times, but is especially necessary when the body is exercising and putting a strain on them.  Water before, during, and after exercise can also help reduce cramping of the muscles and early onset of fatigue.
